Thor Heyerdahl (Norwegian pronunciation: [tuːr hæiːərdɑːl]; October 6, 1914 – April 18, 2002) was a Norwegian ethnographer and adventurer with a background in zoology, botany, and geography. He became notable for his Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between separate cultures. This was linked to a diffusionist model ofcultural development. Heyerdahl subsequently made other voyages designed to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient people. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984.
In May 2011, the Thor Heyerdahl Archives were added to UNESCO's "Memory of the World" Register.[1] At the time, this list included 238 collections from all over the world.[2] The Heyerdahl Archives span the years 1937 to 2002 and include his photographic collection, diaries, private letters, expedition plans, articles, newspaper clippings, original book, and article manuscripts. The Heyerdahl Archives are administered by the Kon-Tiki Museum and the National Library of Norway in Oslo .

She was named after her grandmother's brother.[7] Blake and her four older siblings/half-siblings were raised as Southern Baptists.[8][9] She has an older brother, Eric, two half-sisters, Lori and Robyn,[10] and a half-brother, Jason. Both of her parents and all of her siblings are, or have been, in the entertainment industry.[11] During her childhood, her parents took her with them to acting classes that they taught because they did not want to leave her with a babysitter. Lively said that watching her parents teach acting classes helped her learn the "drills" of acting and gain confidence as she got older.[9][11]

Lively began her acting career at age 11, when she appeared in the 1998 film Sandman, which was directed by Lively's father. She describes her role as a "bit part".[14] She appeared in the film adaptation of the novel of the same name, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, in 2005 as Bridget, one of the four female leads. Lively's performance in the film earned her a nomination for a Teen Choice Award for "Choice Movie Breakout – Female.[15]
In 2006, Lively co-starred with Justin Long in Accepted, and Lively had minor roles in the horror film, Simon Says. While Accepted was not well received by critics, Lively's performance was, earning her a 'Breakthrough Award' from Hollywood Life.[16] In 2007, she played one of the two title characters in Elvis and Anabelle as Anabelle, a bulimic girl who hoped to win a beauty pageant. Lively said of getting into character for the role that she had 'shed serious weight' for her height. Lively stated that that process was difficult for her because food is “the No. 1 love of my life.”[17] MovieLine.com praised her performance in the film and credited it as having been her "breakthrough role".[18]
Lively was cast in the The CW's series Gossip Girl, based on the book series of the same name by Cecily von Ziegesar, which premiered in September 2007. She played Serena van der Woodsen in the teen drama until 2012 when the show ended.[19][20] Her first magazine cover was the November 2007 issue ofCosmo Girl, where she discussed her time in high school and her career prior to Gossip Girl.[21]
In 2009 , Lively reprised her role in the sequel, The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2. Similar to the first film, Lively was positively received by critics.[22][23]As of November 2009, the film had earned over $44 million at the box office.[24] In 2009, Lively appeared as Gabrielle DiMarco, a minor role in the romantic comedy, New York, I Love You, a sequel to the 2006 film Paris, je t'aime. Despite positive critical reception from critics, the film did not fare well at the box office.[25][26]
One of Lively's most acclaimed roles to date is her supporting role playing the younger version of the title character in The Private Lives of Pippa Lee(2009).[27] Paul Byrnes, of the Brisbane Times, described Lively's performance in the film as being "sensational".[28]
In October 2009, Lively began filming her scenes for her role as Kristina "Kris" Coughlin, in the 2010 film The Town, based on Chuck Hogan's novel Prince of Thieves.[29] The film, which starsBen Affleck, was released in the United States on September 17, 2010.
Lively played Carol Ferris, the female lead and love interest of Hal Jordan in the superhero film Green Lantern, which was released in June 2011.[30] The film grossed a worldwide total of $219,851,172.[31] but was considered as a summer disappointment as it "failed to perform to expectations" even though it grossed more than its budget.[32] Lively appeared in the music video for The Lonely Island's "I Just Had Sex" together with Jessica Alba in December 2010.[33]
In 2011, she was featured in the annual TIME magazine 100 influential people.[34] Additionally, AskMen.com named her the most desirable woman of 2011[35] and People magazine named her one of 2012's Most Beautiful at Every Age.[36]

Lively replaced Jennifer Lawrence as Ophelia, the latter dropped out to do The Hunger Games instead. HitFix film critic Drew McWeeny was positive of Lively's work, which he described as "smart and sad precisely because she plays O as such a broken, needy little soul".[37] That same year, she was selected as the face of the new Gucci fragrance titled Gucci Premiere. She appeared in a short film ad directed by Nicolas Winding Refn for the fragrance.[38]

Husain Ibn Muhammed Abdullah

Husain Abdullah (2008).jpg
Husain Ibn Muhammed Abdullah
(born July 27, 1985) is an American football safety for the Kansas City Chiefsof the National Football League (NFL). He was signed by the Minnesota Vikings as an undrafted free agent in 2008. He played college football at Washington State. He is the younger brother of former NFL safety Hamza Abdullah.
Abdullah attended Pomona High School [1] and was most well known for his athletics. In high school, Abdullah received many honorable awards as he represented his school football team as captain. Abdullah is a defensive back and also is a contributor to the special teams unit as a kick returner. During Abdullah's sophomore year, he was awarded the team's defensive MVP and was nominated as rookie of the year. During his junior year, Abdullah won the All-Inland Valley award and as a senior, Abdullah stood as the number 9 ranked safety in the west coast.

NFL career[edit]

Minnesota Vikings[edit]

Abdullah was an undrafted rookie who later signed with the Minnesota Vikings. He served as a backup from 2008 to 2009. Before the 2010 season he was named the starting strong safety, the competition in the offseason and preseason was thought to be between Tyrell Johnson and Jamarca Sanford, but Abdullah won the job. During the 2011 season, Abdullah became the starting free safety, but a concussion (his fourth in 15 months) ended his season.[2]

Kansas City Chiefs[edit]

After he returned from a year off, Abdullah accepted a one-year contract offer from the Chiefs,[2] and played in all 16 games (starting 2) of the 2013 season; he also started the Chiefs' playoff game against Indianapolis, making 2 interceptions in that game to tie a team playoff record.
An unrestricted free agent after the season, Abdullah re-signed with the Chiefs on March 12, 2014. During a Monday Night Football game on September 29, 2014 against the New England Patriots, Abdullah intercepted a pass, returning it for a touchdown. He was given a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for sliding on his knees, then bowing down and giving praise.[3] The next day, the NFL said the penalty was a misapplication of the relevant rule, and should not have been assessed.[4]

Personal life[edit]

Abdullah is the son to Yusuf and Sa'eeda Johnwell.[5] He lived in a very large family, one of 12 children. As a practicing Muslim, Abdullah observes fasting in Ramadan—even during the football season.[6] He sat out the 2012–2013 season to make Hajj, a Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca with his brother Hamza Abdullah, who was also in the NFL.[2]
